On 10 November, the CARBIOW project took part in the workshop organised by the SuStaCEM project, focused on activated recycled building materials, an area that is gaining momentum in the transition towards a more sustainable construction industry. The event was held in Paris (France).
Asier Oleaga Ordax (WP5), Senior Researcher at TECNALIA Research & Innovation, was invited to present the latest developments on the treatment of alkaline wastes through CO₂-based accelerated carbonation. This technique captures CO₂ while transforming these wastes into materials with added value.
During his presentation, he showcased progress in several carbonation pathways applied to different materials, with a particular emphasis on CARBIOW’s findings. These included the carbonation of LF and LD slags, gas/solid reactions under both standard and SCCO₂ conditions, and the assessment of how these treatments influence the cementitious properties of the wastes, enabling their potential use as Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCM) — a highly promising alternative for the sector.
The workshop also brought together some of Europe’s leading companies in the cement industry (Holcim, Heidelberg Materials, Lafarge, France Ciment, Mineral Products Association), making the event a strategic opportunity and an excellent showcase for CARBIOW’s achievements in this field.
