UE Conclusions on the opportunities of the bioeconomy

The use of biomass to produce food, materials, and energy can help boost rural communities, increase competitiveness, and combat many of the challenges facing the EU. The Conclusions of the European Council on bioeconomy recognize the crucial role it could play in achieving the environmental and climate objectives of the European Green Deal, while making the EU more competitive, helping it to move away from dependence on fossil fuels, and strengthening food security to cope with the war in Ukraine.

Ministers stressed the importance of the bioeconomy in helping to regenerate rural and coastal areas by encouraging innovation, research, and creation and promoting job creation and better alignment between scientific advances and industrial policy.

They noted the potential of agri-food waste to produce alternative bio-based resources for sustainable application in different sectors, as well as the potential of non-conventional water resources for irrigation.

The adopted Conclusions will provide policy guidance to the European Commission and Member States on the development of the potential of the bioeconomy in Europe.
