Cut aviation emissions by promoting SAF

The Council and the European Parliament agreed on decarbonise the aviation sector by increasing progressively the percentage of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) that must be blended with kerosene:

2% by 2025
6% by 2030
20% by 2035
34% by 2040
70% by 2050

This measure alone is expected to achieve a reduction of CO2 emissions from aviation, which accounts for 13.4% of total EU transport CO2 emissions, by around two thirds by 2050.

In addition, the approved FuelEU maritime regulation will oblige ships over 5,000 gross tonnes, responsible for 90% of the shipping sector’s CO2 emissions, to progressively reduce the greenhouse gas emission intensity of the energy used on board in case they are calling at European ports.
